Los Angeles Freelance April Mix-Up Sunday April 5th, 3 pm 2009 |
Meet Up Members Meet Biznik Members in Los Angeles
Is it a Meet Up? Is it a Biznik event? It appears to be a Mix-Up!
While all members of the two species appear to be of the self employed breed, no one is quite certain how the intermingling of these two clans will transpire. Separated at birth, the LA Freelance Meet Up members settled in a region of the Los Angeles desert via MeetUp.com. Unbeknownst to the Meet Up members, Biznik members lived a nomadic life wandering the Los Angeles mountain terrain communicating through digital signals and Biznik.com.
The infamous anthropologist and organizer of LA Freelance Meet Up group, Colleen Rice Nelson, has been exploring the vast LA area for signs of Freelance life for many years. Studying the species, "has become a passion of mine over the years" says Colleen. "In my work I have located many different species and breeds of freelancers, congregating near watering holes and local city corners of potential day work. I have found that once they are initiated into a group or pack, it is usually for life or until a member becomes a W2 employee. At that point the W2 offender is ostracized and shunned from the group."
Up until now, no one has seen these creatures commingle in one area simultaneously. Colleen adds; "This breed is rare indeed. They are very independent, loyal, hard-working and creative; however, I see the benefit in the commingling of these groups. I believe it will show them that more resources and similar breeds exist in the Los Angeles basin, and they are not alone."
The upcoming event has the community on edge. Film crews sit outside of Blankspaces weathering the recent California storms in press tents, waiting for April 5th to come. How will the members react to this new adventure? Will they run and hide in their home offices for fear of social interaction? Will they find new power within themselves as they realize they are part of a breed that is growing in this rough economical terrain? This is an opportunity to come out and study how other species of similar breed tackle similar life and work issues.
